Are you a high school or college student looking for summer work? If so, we'd like to talk to you about our hands-on opportunities to explore careers in livestock production, maintenance, and grain farming/milling.
Company Background:
The Hord family is in its 5th generation of family farming, with over 100 years of farming heritage. Headquartered in North Central Ohio and having satellite locations in Pennsylvania and Minnesota, Hord Farms is a pig, cow, and grain farm, striving to raise our animals with care, and utilizing modern and advanced farming practices to be efficient and sustainable. We are currently looking for students age 16+ to add to our Ohio pig, cattle, and feed mill/grain elevator teams for the summer. Agricultural experience is preferred, but these positions offer full training.
Job Details:
Pig Production: These key, entry-level positions are responsible for the daily care, health, and maintenance of all sows and piglets to assure optimum productivity. Work is M-F + every 3rd weekend, indoors in a climate-controlled environment. The ideal candidate will have the desire to work with pigs, a willingness to learn, a high level of dependability as evidenced with a solid work history, and a proven record of drive for excellence.
Cattle: This key position is responsible for the daily care of all cattle, walking pens to check health status of all animals, assisting with vaccinations and implantation, sorting cattle for market; and assisting with power washing, routine maintenance, and repairs. Work is M-F + every 3rd weekend. The ideal candidate will have previous experience working with cattle, a willingness to learn, a high level of dependability as evidenced with a solid work history, and a proven record of drive for excellence. Experience feeding with a TMR, operating a pay loader and skid steer are preferred.
Maintenance: This key position will learn the importance of preventative maintenance, how to perform basic inspections and normal greasing schedules for all moving part, and how to troubleshoot and service electrical and mechanical items. Work is M-F + occasional weekends. The ideal candidate will have some basic maintenance experience, a willingness to learn, a high level of dependability as evidenced with a solid work history, and a proven record of drive for excellence.
Feed Mill/Grain Elevator: A summer farm specialist at the feed mill will learn how to load trucks, operate the feed mill, care for ingredients, and learn how to evaluate and adjust the roller mills for proper corn grinding to ensure optimal nutrition for the pigs in our care. A summer farm specialist at the grain elevator will learn how to properly unload customer trucks in each of our 4 pit locations; properly transfer product around the elevator and eventually to the feed mill through specific sequencing of grain elevators, bin unloads, and grain conveyors; and assist in basic maintenance of the worksite and equipment. Work is M-F + occasional weekends. The ideal candidate will have a willingness to learn, a high level of dependability as evidenced with a solid work history, and a proven record of drive for excellence.
