Position Summary
We are seeking a Coatings Specialist with deep expertise in the formulation, development, and technical support of refractory coatings for ferrous foundry applications. This Cleveland-based role will focus on developing high-performance coatings tailored for iron and steel casting processes, supporting both laboratory-based development and field technical services.
The ideal candidate will bring strong formulation knowledge, hands-on experience, and a collaborative mindset to ensure our coatings consistently meet performance, quality, and customer-specific requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Coatings Formulation & Optimization
Develop, modify, and optimize refractory coatings for ferrous casting applications—primarily for dip, brush, and spray application methods. - Product Development & Testing
Conduct lab evaluations of raw materials, in-process blends, and final products. Support field testing and validate product performance in real-world foundry conditions. - Technical Troubleshooting
Act as the subject matter expert for internal teams and customers in addressing coating-related issues, such as application defects, adhesion, consistency, and performance under high temperatures. - Support to Manufacturing
Collaborate with operations and quality teams to ensure scale-up of new formulations, troubleshoot production issues, and maintain product consistency. - Raw Material Evaluation
Screen, test, and approve raw materials, considering both technical properties and cost optimization. - Documentation & Compliance
Maintain accurate technical data sheets, formulation documentation, and process instructions. Ensure compliance with HSE and regulatory requirements. - Collaboration Across Teams
Work closely with Application Engineers, Product Managers, and Sales to align coating solutions with customer needs and commercial goals.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related field
- Minimum 5 years of experience in industrial coatings formulation, preferably refractory coatings for ferrous applications
- Strong knowledge of coating rheology, refractory material behavior, and surface interaction in molten metal environments
- Hands-on laboratory skills with experience in formulation development and scale-up
- Strong problem-solving, data analysis, and reporting capabilities
- Clear and effective communicator with cross-functional collaboration experience
- Proficient in Microsoft Office; experience with lab testing software is a plus
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in iron or steel foundry environments
- Familiarity with customer-facing technical support or field trials
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred, but not required
- Knowledge of ISO 9001 or other quality systems
