The Material Handling Crane Operator is responsible for operating hydraulic material handlers (grapples, magnets, or clamshell attachments) to move, load, and sort scrap metal in a safe and efficient manner. This role plays a key part in production by ensuring steady material flow, proper stockpiling, and assisting with loading trucks, railcars, and processing equipment.Key Responsibilities

  • Safely operate material handling cranes with grapple/clamshell, magnets to move scrap metal and bulk materials to feed a recovery system.
  • Load and unload trucks, railcars, and processing equipment.
  • Sort and stage scrap material according to type, grade, and processing needs.
  • Inspect equipment daily, monitor fluid levels, and report maintenance/safety issues to supervisors.
  • Maintain awareness of surroundings, ensuring safe operations around ground crews, trucks, and other equipment.
  • Assist in plant cleanup when necessary, by removing oversized or misplaced scrap. Along with keeping a clean work area and help keeping the plant cleaned and organized
  • Follow all company safety standards and OSHA regulations, including PPE use.
  • Communicate effectively with yard and plant personnel to ensure smooth operations.

Qualifications

  • Previous experience operating material handling cranes/excavator in a scrap recycling, construction environment.
  • Ability to operate cranes with different attachments (grapple, magnet, clamshell).
  • Strong situational awareness and commitment to safe operations.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, mostly indoor operations.
  • Mechanical aptitude to identify and report equipment issues.

Work Environment

  • Primarily indoor work in variable weather conditions. Some outdoor processes also.
  • Exposure to dust, noise, heavy equipment, and scrap metal.
  • Requires use of PPE (hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, steel-toe boots, hearing protection, etc.).
