The Medical Records / Health Information Technician is responsible for managing patient health records, ensuring accuracy, completeness, confidentiality, and compliance with legal and regulatory requirements. This role supports clinical staff and administrative operations by maintaining organized, secure, and accessible patient information.
Key Responsibilities
Maintain, organize, and update patient medical records in electronic health record (EHR) and paper formats.
Review medical charts for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with facility policies and regulations.
Ensure timely and accurate coding, filing, and documentation of surgical procedures, lab results, and diagnostic reports.
Respond to requests for medical records from patients, healthcare providers, and authorized entities in compliance with HIPAA and facility policies.
Assist clinical staff with record retrieval and documentation support.
Verify patient demographic and insurance information for accuracy in the health information system.
Perform quality audits of records to identify missing information or documentation discrepancies.
Ensure proper storage, confidentiality, and security of all medical records.
Maintain compliance with state and federal regulations, Joint Commission standards, and facility policies.
Support administrative reporting, data extraction, and quality improvement initiatives.
Qualifications & Skills
Education/Experience
High school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree or certificate in Health Information Management preferred.
Prior experience in medical records management, health information systems, or coding preferred.
Knowledge of HIPAA regulations, medical terminology, and electronic health record systems is essential.
Skills & Attributes
Strong attention to detail and accuracy in maintaining patient records.
Proficiency with EHR software and standard office applications.
Excellent organizational and record-keeping skills.

Working Conditions & Schedule
On-site role in the health information or administrative office of Ohio Surgery Center.
Standard daytime schedule, typically Monday through Friday, with flexibility based on facility needs.
Primarily sedentary work with extended periods at a computer or workstation.
Minimal exposure to patient care areas, though occasional access to clinical areas may be required.
