Position Overview – Plumber
Responsible for assembling, installing, and repairing pipes, fittings, and fixtures for heating, water, and drainage systems in accordance with plans and plumbing codes.
Key Responsibilities
- Review building plans and drawings to determine necessary tools and installation sequence.
- Inspect structures to identify obstructions and avoid weakening the building during pipe installation.
- Mark pipe locations, connections, and passage holes using measuring tools (ruler, level, plumb bob).
- Cut openings in walls and floors for pipes using hand and power tools.
- Cut and thread pipe using cutters, torches, and threading machines.
- Bend pipe using bending machines or manual methods.
- Assemble and install valves, fittings, and pipes made of metal (iron, steel, brass, lead) and non-metals (glass, clay, plastic).
- Join pipes using screws, bolts, fittings, solder, plastic solvent, and caulk.
- Test systems by filling with water or air and checking pressure gauges for leaks.
- Install and repair plumbing fixtures (sinks, toilets, tubs, water heaters, tanks, softeners).
- May weld holding fixtures to structural steel.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Job Requirements
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED.
- Completion of an apprenticeship program.
- Licensing required for Journeyman; not required for helper/apprentice.
- Ability to work with precise accuracy and make decisions based on measurable criteria.
- Ability to interpret and visualize 3D structures from plans and drawings.
Requirements
- Ability to lift/carry up to 100 lbs; repetitive lifting of 25–30 lbs.
- Good vision (natural or corrected).
- Ability to stand, stoop, kneel/crouch, climb, and maintain balance on ladders/scaffolds.
- Strong manual dexterity for skilled hand work.
