The Lighting Controls Technician is responsible for programming, commissioning, troubleshooting, and maintaining lighting control systems in commercial, industrial, or residential environments. This role ensures that lighting systems operate efficiently, meet design specifications, comply with codes, and deliver the desired user experience. The technician works closely with project managers, electrical contractors, engineers, and end-users to deliver high-quality system performance.
Key Responsibilities

  • Installation & Wiring
    • Install lighting control hardware including sensors, dimmers, relays, networked controllers, user interfaces, and low-voltage devices.
    • Interpret electrical drawings, specifications, risers, and control system schematics.
    • Ensure installations meet NEC, local codes, and manufacturer best practices.
  • Programming & Commissioning
    • Program and configure lighting control systems (e.g., DMX, DALI, 010V, networked control platforms).
    • Perform system testing, calibration, and functional verification.
    • Adjust system settings to meet design intent and customer requirements.
  • Troubleshooting & Maintenance
    • Diagnose and repair issues in lighting networks, sensors, control panels, and communication protocols.
    • Perform preventative maintenance on installed systems.
    • Provide on-site and remote technical support.
  • Project Coordination
    • Work with project managers and electricians to ensure smooth installation and turnover.
    • Communicate system status, issues, and updates clearly to stakeholders.
    • Document system configurations, settings, and changes.
  • Customer Support & Training
    • Train end-users on system operation and interfaces.
    • Provide detailed reports and user guides as needed.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Strong understanding of electrical systems, low-voltage wiring, and lighting technologies.
  • Experience with lighting control platforms (e.g., Lutron, Crestron, ETC, Acuity, nLight, Philips/Signify, Leviton, or similar).
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings and control diagrams.
  • Proficiency in basic networking concepts (IP addressing, routers, switches, etc.) preferred.
  • Strong diagnostic and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Excellent communication and customer-service skills.
  • Valid drivers license; ability to travel to job sites.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associates degree or technical certification in electrical, electronics, automation, or related field.
  • Journeyman or low-voltage electrical experience.
  • Manufacturer certifications (Lutron, Crestron, ETC, nLight, etc.)
  • Experience with building automation or AV control systems.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift 50 lbs and work on ladders, lifts, and job-site environments.
  • Comfort with extended periods of standing, bending, or working overhead.

Work Environment

  • Field-based with travel to construction sites, client facilities, or service locations.
  • Occasional after-hours or weekend work depending on project needs.
