Expected Duration: 6 months
Job Type: Temp to Hire for the right candidate
Pay rate: $18.44/hr on W2
Need: Minimum of 3 months of dental assisting experience required. Candidates with job-hopping or short-term roles will not be considered. A stable and consistent work history is a must.
Position Summary
POSITION OBJECTIVE
Working under general supervision, the Dental Assistant 1 will support residents and faculty in the Periodontal Department within the School of Dental Medicine. Primary duties include surgical assistance as well as the management of supplies and equipment.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Provide properly sterilized instruments and equipment for residents. (25%)

Provide chairside assistance for faculty, residents, and hygienists (only when residents are in class). (15%)
-
Dispense supplies, instruments, and equipment to residents to ensure efficient and timely patient treatment. (15%)

Monitor usage of dental and office supplies. Prepare requisitions for reordering materials and supplies. Obtain proper authorization. (6%)

Prepare the clinic for the day’s schedule. Assist with cleaning cubicles, stocking supplies, and refreshing sterile water daily in each cubicle unit. (10%)
NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Verify proof of patient payment for all procedures and specialty items such as implants, bone grafts, etc. (5%)

Track and follow up on insurance pretreatment estimates. (5%)

Check equipment to ensure it is in good working order. Contact appropriate service vendors or dental school staff for repairs. (5%)

Verify completion of all forms after entries and report deficiencies to attending faculty and residents. (5%)

Help manage the daily clinic schedule to maintain timely and efficient patient flow. (2%)

Take dental radiographs. (2%)

Track and record all medical, laboratory, and pathology reports and relevant forms in the patient record. (2%)

Maintain MSDS sheets for departmental materials. (1%)

Maintain emergency equipment and assist with resuscitation procedures. (1%)

Instruct residents during orientation sessions on clinic procedures, including maintenance of sterility. (1%)

Perform other duties as assigned. (<1%)
CONTACTS
-
Department: Continuous contact with cashiers, dispensary staff, receptionists, insurance personnel, graduate specialty clinics, and clinical instructors on a daily basis to obtain/provide information and resolve problems. Daily contact with the department chair and clinic director to exchange information and address issues.

University: Infrequent to no contact.

External: Continuous contact with patients to assist and advise.

Students: Continuous contact with graduate and postgraduate residents to assist and advise.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
None.
QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: Minimum of 3 months of dental assisting experience required.

Education/Licensing: High school diploma required. Certified Dental Assistant. Current State of Ohio radiology certification. Annual CPR certification.
REQUIRED SKILLS
-
Basic knowledge of computer software.

Basic knowledge of insurance codes and forms.

Familiarity with Microsoft Word and Excel.

Technical knowledge of dental assisting and sterilization.

Demonstrated history of successful support, education, and advocacy for students, aligned with the values, mission, and messaging of the university, while adhering to staff policy on conflict of commitment and interest.

Consistent attendance and reliability.

Ability to interact professionally with colleagues, supervisors, and customers in person.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is performed in a clinical setting and requires general knowledge of chemicals, bloodborne pathogens, and lab safety. Daily exposure to biohazards and sharps is expected. Use of personal protective equipment—including lab coat, gloves, and safety glasses—may be required. Safety hazards may occur if explosive agents are used or oxygen is handled under unsafe conditions. Although modern equipment, facility design, and compliance with safety standards minimize risks, a remote potential for explosion exists when oxygen and explosive anesthetics are used. Unusual stress may occur during sedation or patient emergency situations.
