Job Title: Head of Estimating
Location: Columbus, Oh
Salary: $100,000 – $125,000 (Based on experience)
Employment Type: Full-Time
Position Summary
A growing construction company is seeking a Head of Estimating to lead and manage its estimating department. This role is responsible for overseeing proposal development, training estimators, and ensuring accurate and competitive bids. The ideal candidate brings both technical knowledge and leadership skills to support the company’s continued success in winning work.
Key ResponsibilitiesEstimating & Proposal Development

Supervise, train, and mentor a team of estimators.

Select and manage the estimating software platform.

Prepare and submit accurate price proposals for assigned projects.

Review plans, specifications, and addenda in detail.

Perform material quantity take-offs and labor estimates based on industry standards.

Conduct internal bid reviews and ensure timely proposal submissions.

Use estimating spreadsheets, proposal templates, and internal proposal libraries proficiently.

Attend walkthroughs and pre-bid meetings; follow up with general contractors post-bid to determine pricing position and attempt to close.
Subcontractor & Supplier Coordination

Gather and evaluate proposals from subcontractors and suppliers.

Maintain and develop strong relationships with general contractors, estimators, project managers, and vendors.

Evaluate supplier quotes for responsiveness and competitiveness.
Technical & Code Knowledge

Understand applicable local and state building codes (including Ohio Building Code, if relevant).

Work collaboratively with the production or operations team to ensure estimates are accurate and buildable.

Be able to describe project documents clearly and confidently in meetings.
Education & Development

Join and participate in industry associations (e.g., ASPE).

Attend manufacturer training sessions and industry seminars.

Stay up to date with relevant newsletters, articles, and best practices.

Share relevant training and knowledge with the estimating team.
Administrative Oversight

Keep project records up to date in tracking systems (e.g., project capture spreadsheets).

Maintain organized bid folders and ensure clean handoffs to production.

Ensure documentation is properly maintained, including notes, photos, and RFIs.

Hold team members accountable for accurate and consistent recordkeeping.
Qualifications

Minimum 5 years of experience in construction or mechanical estimating.

Strong understanding of construction plans, specifications, and codes.

Demonstrated leadership experience managing or mentoring estimators.

Proficient in estimating software, Excel-based tools, and proposal development.

Excellent organizational, communication, and follow-up skills.
