Job Description

PrideStaff is hiring for a Flat Laser Operator on first, second, and weekend shift. The Flat Laser Operator is responsible for setting up, operating, and performing basic maintenance on flatbed laser cutting machines to accurately cut sheet metal materials according to engineering specifications and production schedules. This role requires attention to detail, a strong commitment to safety, and the ability to work independently to ensure high-quality parts are produced efficiently.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Machine Operation & Setup:
    • Set up and operate CNC flatbed laser cutting machines (e.g., Bystronic, Trumpf, Amada, Mazak) to cut various materials (e.g., mild steel, stainless steel, aluminum) and thicknesses.
    • Load and unload raw materials (sheet metal) onto the laser bed, ensuring proper alignment and secure clamping.
    • Select and install appropriate lenses, nozzles, and cutting parameters based on material type and thickness.
    • Perform machine offsets, adjustments, and minor tooling changes as needed.
  • Program Management:
    • Retrieve, load, and verify CNC programs for production runs.
    • Monitor machine operation for potential malfunctions, program errors, or quality issues and make necessary adjustments or corrections.
    • Collaborate with programming or engineering departments to optimize cutting paths and nesting for material efficiency.
  • Quality Control:
    • Perform first-piece inspection using measuring tools (e.g., calipers, micrometers, tape measures, protractors) to ensure parts meet blueprint specifications.
    • Continuously monitor the quality of the cut parts throughout the production run and make timely adjustments to maintain tolerance.
    • Identify and segregate non-conforming material and finished parts.
  • Maintenance & Safety:
    • Perform routine and preventative maintenance on the laser machine, including cleaning the cutting head, changing filters, emptying scrap bins, and checking gas levels (where applicable).
    • Troubleshoot and resolve minor machine issues or error codes.
    • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area, adhering to all company safety protocols, including the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Documentation & Communication:
    • Complete required production paperwork, including work orders, inspection reports, and maintenance logs.
    • Communicate production status, material shortages, and machine issues to the supervisor and preceding/succeeding shifts.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED) required.
  • Minimum of 1-3 years of experience operating CNC laser cutting machines in a manufacturing or fabrication environment.
  • Experience with specific laser control software (e.g., Bylaser, TruTops, Amada SheetWorks) is a plus.

Skills and Competencies:

  • Technical Proficiency: Strong mechanical aptitude and demonstrated ability to read and interpret engineering blueprints, schematics, and technical specifications, including Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Measurement Skills: Proficient in using standard precision measuring instruments.
  • Material Knowledge: Familiarity with the properties and cutting requirements of various metals (steel, stainless steel, aluminum, etc.).
  • Problem-Solving: Ability to troubleshoot basic machine and quality issues quickly and effectively.
  • Work Ethic: Detail-oriented, self-motivated, and capable of working with minimal supervision.
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to stand for extended periods, lift up to 50 lbs, and perform repetitive movements.
